Joel: backup aren't good enough

Weak systems may appear perfectly healthy until neighboring systems break down. People with allergies and back problems may go for months without suffering from either one, but suddenly an attack of hayfever makes them sneeze hard enough to throw out their back. You see this in systems administration all the time

Computerworld: chemical debugging:

"Something was getting into our environment and eating these solder connections," fish says. "We thought, What could it possibly be? What could make a solder connection shrink?"

SVG 1.1, with demos

SVG 1.1, Mobile Profiles reach Recommendation status. The W3C has released the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) 1.1 Specification and Mobile SVG Profiles: SVG Tiny and SVG Basic as Recommendations, along with some much more exciting demos than is typical for the XML world. [xmlhack]

Commercial services using SVG Tiny are already in use on cellphones in Japan; other countries are expected to see such services shortly.

Yet another good article from Jon Udell:

Service advertisement techniques such as UDDI are not likely to pass the View Source test anytime soon, and will not be easy for most people to imitate. What people can do, pretty easily, is post links. Services that express themselves in terms of links will, therefore, create powerful affordances for use, for imitation, and for discovery. This is actually a bad news:

Apple uses XML for new presentation format, but shuns SVG. Tim Bray pointed to an example of the XML vocabulary for Apple's new presentation program, Keynote. He also noted that "it includes a fairly complete vector-graphics facility." This led to discussion of why Apple chose not to use SVG for vector graphics. [xmlhack]

After many year of broken promises, VoIP is coming:

Bob Frankston: VoIP is a simple idea and simply works. In the Times article, the Verizon spokesperson said that the Public Switched Telephone Network has worked well for many decades. That's true by comparison to the alternatives -- no phone system at all. Now that we have alternatives the PSTN comes up wanting. [Tomalak's Realm]

Disruptive web, recombinant growt. Jon Udell is forging patterns.

If you're creating a Web service that you hope will have a disruptive impact, the lessons are clear. Support HTTP GET-style URLs. Design them carefully, matching de facto standards where they exist. Keep the URLs short, so people can easily understand, modify, and trade them. Establish a blog reputation. Use the blog network to promote the service and enable users of the service to self-organize. It all adds up to a recipe for recombinant growth.
