Lette così di seguito fanno un po' impressione, già sappiamo che non si fermeranno (e intanto ho postato il bannerino).
Pur con tutto il dispiacere di un vecchio appassionato dei voli spaziali (che probabilmente il programma shuttle ha ritardato, ma questa è un'altra storia) temo uno scoppio incontenibile di retorica, che ci attende nei prossimi giorni. Ho già sentito parlare di eroi, di spirito americano, di stelle cadenti.
Attenzione: siamo sulle vette della retorica e stiamo per scollinare nelle vallate del ridicolo. Onore ai morti ma attenzione alla misura (che migliaia di caduti dalle impalcature potrebbero rivoltarsi nella tomba).
Ho finalmente finito "Anni interessanti" di Eric Hobsbawm. Il libro è interessante, soprattutto all'inizio (Hosbawm è un ebreo Inglese, nato a Alessandria D'Egitto e vissuto a Vienna, Berlino e Londra. Era a Berlino nel '33 e deve la sua sopravvivenza all'aver lasciato la Germania subito dopo l'avvento di Hitler).
Il libro è a tratti noioso, perché passati gli ardori giovanili la vita di un professore universitario non è il massimo dell'avventura, ma Hobsbawm scrive con gusto e i suoi commenti sono (secondo me) intelligenti e soprattutto onesti.
L'amore per la storia, il jazz, una vera passione per il genere umano rendono Hobsbawm una persona che sarebbe bello incontrare (a differenza di molti scrittori). Ci sono alcuni estratti che vorrei riportare qui, e forse lo farò nei prossimi giorni, se ne avrò voglia. Una lettura molto piacevole.
Attraverso Giovani Tromboni arrivo alla mailing list Risks dove si parla diffusamente di Slammer. Interessante è il comunicato parametrico che riporto in quanto utile per tutte le stagioni:

the vulnerability and how to exploit it. They also mentioned how to fix
it, but apparently <noun> listened. Coincidentally, the worm that
exploited this hole was also first identified by <same company>. Even
more coincidentally, they make a product to protect against <noun>.
"Actually, it's not really a <noun>, it's a <noun>," said <Pete
Lindstrom, or some other person seeking publicity>. " A true <noun>
works by <random filler that nobody will read>."
The worm's payload <verb> every system by <verb ending in -ing> the
<noun>. Comparatively speaking, this is much worse than <another worm>

Though there is no way to protect against this particular bug, experts
recommend trying <longshot one> or <longshot two>, neither of which
matter, since nobody will do it anyway.
