Wired ha un articolo assolutamente affascinante sul virus Slammer. Spiega come funziona (molto alla larga, non bisogna essere specialisti di rete per capirlo) e quali danni ha fatto.
By 12:45 am, huge sections of the Internet began to wink out of existence. Net Access Corporation, one of the Northeast's largest ISPs, sent out an early SOS: "Nearly half our ports are in delta alarm right now." [..] Three hundred thousand cable modems in Portugal went dark, and South Korea fell right off the map: no cell phone or Internet service for 27 million people. Five of the Internet's 13 root-name servers - hardened systems, all - succumbed to the squall of packets. Corporate email systems jammed. Web sites stopped responding. [..]Slammer had knocked out more than just the Internet. Emergency 911 dispatchers in suburban Seattle resorted to paper. Continental Airlines, unable to process tickets, canceled flights from its Newark hub.
Voli cancellati, problemi al 911 (è il 113 americano), è una fortuna se nessuno è morto per questo virus. La chiusura dell'articolo è poco comprensibile ai non specialisti:

Il riferimento (credo) è a questo (preoccupante) articolo: How to 0wn the internet in your spare time che spiega come è possibile (con un attacco coordinato) mettere in ginocchio la rete in modo molto più massiccio. Roberto Vacca aveva anticipato la nostra dipendenza da sistemi troppo complessi nel suo "Il medioevo prossimo venturo", che è di 30 anni fa.
I libri di Roberto Vacca sono spesso nelle bancarelle al 50 % di sconto. E' un peccato che si leggano puttanate e non questo ingegnere romano di grandissima intelligenza. La prossima volta che vedete uno dei suoi libri nella mucchia "tre per cinque euro" compratelo, potrebbero essere soldi spesi molto bene.
